Board of Directors Vacancy Announcement - Nominations Requested

Amendments to the Maryland Nurse Practice Act during the 2017 legislative session changed the make-up of the Board of Directors. The changes become effective October 1, 2017.
 
In accordance with Health Occupations Article, §8-202, as amended, the new Board will have 14 members: 9 registered nurses (RN), 2 licensed practical nurses (LPN), and 2 consumer members.  Two of the registered nurse members shall be advanced practice registered nurses and the additional member shall be a licensed nurse who is either a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, or advanced practice registered nurse.
 
This new legislation has created two vacancies in the Board membership.  This vacancy is for an at-large position.
 
Names of nominees can be submitted by professional associations or by petition from the nurse seeking an appointment to the Board of Nursing.  A petition shall be signed by 25 nurses who have active unencumbered Maryland licenses representative of the applicant’s practice.  An advanced practice applicant seeking appointment by petition shall have 25 signature from APRNs in his or her Advanced Practice certification category:  i.e., a CRNP will need 25 signatures from CRNPs.  The same policy applies for all APRNs, RNs, or LPNs.
 
All interested applicants are required to submit a formal application through the Governor’s Appointments Office website at http://govappointments.maryland.gov/ no later than November 20, 2017.  Applicants will be required to upload their resume during the online application process. All applicants will be required to complete the Appointee Exemption Disclosure (AED) form.  If appointed the AED form will be filed with the State Ethics Commission and becomes a public document.  The State Ethics Commission recommends that all applicants request an exemptions for employment and if the own or co-own a business.  The Commission can be reached at 410-260-7770.
 
  • All applicants should make themselves familiar with the §8-202 of the Health Occupation Article before applying for Board membership.
  • To be eligible for a Board appointment the applicant must be a Maryland resident and have an active unencumbered license.
  • Terms are for four years. 
  • Board member are required to attend monthly Board meetings on the 4th Wednesday of every month except for November and December when meeting dates are earlier due to holiday schedules.    The meetings start at 9am and typically last until 5 or 6 PM.
  • Additionally, Board members will be expected to serve on Board committees, assist in complaint resolution hearings, and attend settlement conferences for at least a half day two or more times a month.
  • A Board member receives $200.00 per diem per day plus travel expenses.  
  • Board members are subject to the State Ethics Law and are required to file an annual financial disclosure with the Maryland State Ethics Commission.
  • If an applicant is serving in an official capacity with Board/Association, the applicant should list their role and note their willingness to resign immediately if appointed to the Board.
 
Please note that all applicants are thoroughly vetted and may be interviewed by a subject matter expert.   The Governor appoints all licensed nurse board members with the advice of the Secretary of the Department of Health.  Consumer members are appointed by the Governor with the advice of the Secretary and the advice and consent of the Senate.
